Gender-swapping is not exactly a breath of fresh air anymore, especially when it comes to reboots, but TMNT: Mutant Mayhem’s is a fascinating approach, considering that Donatello or Donnie has long been known as the

Donnie is the second youngest of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, led by his two older brothers Leonardo or ‘Leo’ (Nicholas Cantu) and Raphael or ‘Raph’ (Brady Noon), with Michaelangelo or ‘Mikey’ (Shamon Brown Jr.) being the youngest.

Donnie is being voiced by 15-year-old Micah Abbey, who will be making his debut on the big screen soon.

Donnie’s voice in the film (arguably, all four turtles) have notably higher pitches than in their previous projects, which honestly reels in the attraction to the movie more, considering the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are being voiced by actual teenagers now.

Leatherhead, who is the infamous mutant-humanoid villain in the TMNT universe, has always been long depicted as male. That is, until Mutant Mayhem came into view. Leatherhead is voiced by Bridesmaids actress Rose Byrne.

Meanwhile, another gender-swapped character we see in the film is none other than another villain included, named Cynthia Utrom, voiced by Grown Ups and Bridesmaids’ Maya Rudolph.

The ‘Utroms’ are one of the evil alien species widely known in the TMNT universe. You may know them because of their most famous member, Krang, who is often portrayed as a male.

However, considering Cynthia Utrom is technically a new character, she has not been gender-swapped. Although it could be that she is the replacement for Krang, likely the ‘female version’ of him in the reboot.
