Elodie (played by Millie Bobby Brown) fulfills her duty by accepting the arranged marriage she was set up in. Of course, it helps that she is marrying the kind-hearted and handsome Prince Henry (played by Nick Robinson).

While Elodie accepts her fate, her stepmother, Lady Bayford (played by Angela Bassett), is unconvinced that the family she's marrying into are good people.

True enough, Lady Bayford sees right through the royal family's secrets. During their wedding, Elodie is led to a mountainside with a handful of trusted individuals hiding behind gold masks.

As Prince Henry carries her over a bridge and tells her to close her eyes. He stops mid-way and throws Elodie into the abyss.

Injured and confused, Elodie ventures into the cave before coming face-to-face with a fearsome dragon intent on killing her.

As Elodie discovers in the cave, she is not the first woman that Prince Henry's family has thrown into the cave. They have sacrificed plenty of other women in a ritual bent on upholding "legacy of honor and duty."

She discovers that the royal family has been sacrificing innocent women for years so they can keep the peace in their kingdom. She also learns that the royal family killed the dragon's children for no reason.

Because of this, the royal family came up with an arrangement with the dragon for the sacrifices. As Elodie fights for her survival, she fights for the other women who were sacrificed in the past.

Despite Elodie's pleas for the dragon to spare her life, she is intent on killing her and her sister, Floria (played by Brooke Carter). The dragon (voiced by Shohreh Aghdashloo) says she "will take their daughters breath until my final breath."

Elodie explains to the dragon that they were both lied to by the royal family. She tells the dragon that she is "not one of them," but the dragon says that she can "smell it in your blood."

After fighting off the dragon, Elodie shows her wounded hand from the wedding ceremony. She explains that during the wedding ceremony, the royals slit their hands and combined their blood with them.

"That is the blood you smell. They fooled you - you've been killing innocent daughters just like they did."

As the dragon tells her to kill her, Elodie refuses and says "I'm through doing what I'm told." She then uses magical water to heal the wounds of the dragon.

Later, Elodie interrupts another wedding ceremony happening at the royal castle. Queen Isabelle (played by Robin Wright) tells her that she "knows nothing of our story." Elodie responds: "It's not me you should fear. This is the end of your story."

The dragon then emerges from below and sets the entire caste on fire together with the royal family.

As the film ends, Elodie and Floria reunite with Lady Bayford. As they sail back home, the dragon flies beside them indicating that the dragon turns good in Damsel's ending.
