Pets belong to families as part of their home and usually, dogs are the most common companion that households have. In The Last of Us, the neighbors of Joel and Sarah, the Adlers, have an adorable dog named Mercy and she is one tough pet, too.

Mercy seemed to have an idea already that there is something wrong with the matriarch of the Adlers as she is seen curious and staring at the grandma. Later in the episode, Mercy came running to the Miller's house asking for help from Sarah who usually goes there before Joel comes home.

A smart noodle that she is, Mercy came to the right doorstep. She is scared but she cares about Sarah that she barks at her when Sarah tries to take her home. The dog already knows something is wrong, and as Sarah sees the eldest of the Adlers devouring her whole family, Sarah ran for her life.

Just in time, Joel and Tommy arrives and Sarah is safe from the eldest Adler but upon seeing her humans like that, Mercy ran away, never to be seen again, while Joel, Tommy, and Sarah flees their infested neighborhood.

It is safe to say that Mercy survived in The Last of Us Episode 1, however, she would have to escape all of the threats that are around her and learn to scour for food, drinks, and shelter. Still, a dog's life is shorter than humans and the setting being 20 years after the day of the outbreak, Mercy could have gone sooner.

Dogs are clever, perceptive, and Mercy could have survived a few more weeks or months, or even years after the day of the outbreak. To date, her fate is unknown but the time jump is quite telling that she may not have survived all throughout.
