Isaki Magari's Condition Explained
Already from the first episode of Insomniacs After School, Magari alludes to the fact that she was frail as a child. Later, she explains her condition -- and the source of her insomnia.
Isaki Magari was born with only one heart valve. After a series of surgeries, she's able to lead a relatively normal life, though she's still a bit frail.
Sometimes, she needs to be hospitalized and she doesn't know if she'll even be able to live a full life span.
This turns out to be the deeper reason behind her insomnia.
Having a condition that could get worse at any time, Magari is afraid of going to sleep, as she's worried she might never wake up.
So far, her condition is a bit of a backstory and doesn't play an active role in the plot.
While the first episodes tackle insomnia and mental health, the show then becomes more of a slice-of-life anime about astronomy -- for now.
Yet, fans who are aware of the most heartbreaking anime fear Magari might be marked for death.
Will Isaki Magari Die in Insomniacs After School?
So far, Magari is alive in the ongoing Insomniacs After School manga. However, we don't know yet how the manga ends, and some fans aren't optimistic.
In Chapter 80 of the manga, for instance, Magari gets worse and has to stay in bed for a while.
The characters expect snow -- often a metaphor for death in literature -- and Nakami points out how cold Magari's hands are as she falls asleep.
More than twenty chapters later, Magari seems to be doing fine, but many readers don't trust things to keep going well.

Death in School Anime
There are many sad anime movies and shows that start off as wholesome and sweet coming-of-age stories, only to kill a character.
Your Lie in April and I Want to Eat Your Pancreas are a few examples.
Many viewers and readers feel that Insomniacs After School aims for a similar vibe and they're convinced that Magari won't survive.
While we can't know for sure until the end, we see where they're coming from. That being said, we do hope that Magari might survive.
Already, the story seems to be Nakami's more than Magari's. There's nothing wrong with that, but one must tread carefully to avoid manic pixie dream girl tropes.
This trope refers to female characters who are only there to make the male lead's life bright and quirky, with little personal goals and development for themselves.
Magari has enough of an inner life to not fall into this trope. But, if Insomniacs After School kills her, the anime would ultimately be all about Nakami's growth.
Of course, anyone can die at any time, but given how overdone this is, it'd be great if Insomniacs After School could come up with a less predictable ending.
