Doctor Who's Abandoned Christmas Specials Are Set For An Official Return, Says Showrunner

No one can debate that Doctor Who is one of the classic sci-fi series of the century. Aside from its various Doctors, who've been portrayed by many incredible actors, one of the things that made Doctor Who momentous was its iconic Christmas Specials.

Over the past years, the Christmas specials have been put on hold as a transition to the New Year specials. Fans who missed the show's original Christmas elements can now rejoice, as showrunner Russell T. Davies has confirmed that the Yuletide will return in time and space.

“For the first time ever, I'm writing a Christmas Special... at Christmas! And this isn't for next year, no, the 2023 script has been long since signed-off. The new one is for end-of-year 2024!” Davies revealed to Doctor Who Magazine #585 (via TVZone).

Davies popularized the Christmas Specials, which became an integral part of the first Doctor Who run, and this initiative was maintained until Steven Moffat's management. However, Chris Chibnall had a new idea to introduce the New Year's Specials, which, despite the creative measures, weren't able to keep the fans attached.

The fact that Davies has returned the segment of Christmas Special was not particularly surprising, because as David Tennant believes, the show was less magical without it. The fans have also believed that it should not have been removed in the first place.

However, fan favorite Thirteenth Doctor Jodie Whittaker will be the only modern Doctor not to star in a Christmas special as she recently made her final appearance in October. In 2017, Whittaker made history as the first woman to ever play the role.
