Doctor Who's 60th anniversary is coming, and fans will see the one major difference it has compared to other anniversary specials in the show's history.

Doctor Who's 60th anniversary will see the return of three major parts of the franchise, David Tennant, Catherine Tate, and former showrunner Russell T. Davies. So, what makes it different?

This will be the first time a former Doctor will return to play as a new Time Lord.

David Tennant's Return

Fans will once again see Tennant as the Doctor after doing so in Doctor Who's 50th anniversary.

However, he will no longer be the 10th Doctor this time, but the 14th Doctor after the 13th Doctor, Jodie Whittaker, regenerated into Tennant at the end of The Power of the Doctor wearing a new suit.

This just meant Tennant was a new reincarnation, a major twist no one saw coming.

The Only Returning Doctor in Doctor Who's 60th Anniversary

According to Screen Rant, Tennant is probably the only Doctor who will return to Doctor Who's 60th anniversary.

He was the only Doctor spotted during the show's filming, and no announcement was made about another Doctor coming either.

Though there may be more surprises to come, not featuring a multi-Doctor storyline will be the first in the show's history.

The 10th anniversary special, Three Doctors, was the first time fans saw two Doctors on one screen.

The first, second, and third Doctors starred simultaneously, starting the tradition of seeing past actors returning for special episodes.

So, if Tennant's return breaks this tradition, this will be seen as a major move in the series.

Though Doctor Who's 60th-anniversary special is set to introduce Ncuti Gatwa as the 15th Doctor, it may not happen until the regeneration occurs later in the show—unless there's a major twist coming.

Possible Surprising Appearance of Two More Doctors

Doctor Who's 60th anniversary will be preceded by The Power of the Doctor, which was also an anniversary episode that celebrated 100 years of BBC.

The first, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth Doctors returned at the time. But despite being a major celebration, Screen Rant noted that it took the pressure off the upcoming special to bring back past Doctors due to the "scale of its predecessor."

The Doctors in Power of the Doctor were all from the classic era, so the likes of Peter Capaldi and/or Matt Smith may be featured in Doctor Who's 60th anniversary.

Though the two already denied involvement in the upcoming special, it's not far from happening.

Sure, the upcoming episodes may not rely on past Doctors' appearances, making the story more focused, but their coming will surely make the show more exciting.
