Doctor Who Just Took Out Another Major Element In The Classic Series

It looks like Jodie Whitaker's Doctor Who is making even more changes to one of history's most iconic, longest-running science fiction series. First, BBC made the bold and groundbreaking move of turning everyone's favorite Time-Lord into a woman after years of traditionally taking the shape of a man. Then, the network decided to forego Doctor Who's Christmas Special, opting instead to place air the episode during New Year's Eve.

Now, it looks like the new iteration of Doctor Who has struck again, this time wiping out one major element of the series. In the New Year Special episode "Resolution," scriptwriter Chris Chibnall decided to tie in the new series with the classic by having the Doctor calling for help after learning about the threat of a Dalek on Earth (via Screen Rant). In the episode, fans get to see the Doctor calling out to U.N.I.T. (Unified Intelligence Taskforce), an agency that has worked alongside the Doctor in various iterations ever since Patrick Troughton took on the role.

Unfortunately, Whitaker's Doctor soon learns that the U.N.I.T. is no longer in existence. The agency was suspended after the British Government in the universe of Doctor Who decided to completely withdraw its funding for the organization.

While this might seem a bit heartbreaking to fans who've been long-since following the series, the absence of the U.N.I.T. raises the stakes for the Doctor and her team. Without any backup or support, it looks like it's all up to the Doctor now to take care of the Earth.

We can't wait and see how she manages that when Doctor Who season 12 premieres sometime this year.
