Doctor Who: How The New Doctor's Aikido Skills Pays Tribute to Past Doctors

The latest season of Doctor Who continues to be a quality program, with many enjoying the first female Doctor and her quirks since some of them directly come from previous incarnations. This has usually been the case with Doctor Who since the series has reincarnated the character a lot of times and the latest series does justice to that concept with the Doctor's aikido skills.

Sorry, Venusian aikido.

According to CBR, the character's knowledge of Venusian aikido isn't something that started with this Doctor but was actually present back in the 1970's. It was the third Doctor that first used these skills to defend himself from various threats. Since aikido is something primarily used for defensive purposes, this makes it a great set of skills for the Doctor, who does not actively seek violence.

Now it's not just the third and thirteenth Doctor who have used these skills. Peter Capaldi's well-liked twelfth Doctor also used Venusian aikido to defend himself a number of times, so having number 13 use it makes even more sense. Obviously, they won't cram every Doctor trait in the thirteenth one but simple nods like this are great for continuity buffs.

Having the thirteenth Doctor use Venusian aikido makes perfect sense when you consider how much of a pacifist she is. While all of the Doctors seek out peace, this one made sure to point out how important non-violence is to her lifestyle when she said that she would never use guns. Whether she gets a Batman Beyond moment and uses a gun to defend herself is a topic of discussion to be had but anything is possible.

Doctor Who airs on Sundays via BBC and BBC America.
