Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be the First Horror-Fueled MCU Movie

Director Scott Derrickson has mostly worked on horror, but he proved that he can also do comic book films with Doctor Strange. Marvel Studios has just announced Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness at SDCC 2019, and Derrickson confirms this sequel will delve more into his horror roots.

Talking during Marvel's Hall H panel at Comic-Con (via CinemaBlend), Derrickson said:

"When I came and talked to [Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige] about doing a sequel, I said, ‘I don't want to do just another sequel. If I'm going to do it, it needs to go into the territory that drew me into the Doctor Strange comics in the first place' – which is how they dipped into the gothic and the horror and the horrific. And we're going to make the first scary MCU movie."

With the first movie being more mystic and psychedelic, I'm very open to see a kind of switch in genre when it comes to this sequel. With a villain called Nightmare, I can only expect that this film will definitely give us some genuine spooks. I mean, if they were able to give us something as trippy as the Mysterio sequence from Spider-Man: Far from Home, I think they should go all out when it comes to a Doctor Strange movie.

Besides the return of Benedict Cumberbatch, it's also said that Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) will have a major role in the movie. With Wanda's powers said to come from the Mind Stone, I would love to see how she handles working on actual magic with the Sorcerer Supreme himself.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to come out May 7, 2021.
