When Doctor Strange and America Chavez was taken into the Illuminati facility after Baron Mordo lures them by spiking their drink with a sedative, Strange was surprised to see Christine Palmer from that reality as a scientist who specializes her works in to learn more about the different realities around the multiverse.

When Christine mentioned that the reality they are currently in is Earth 838, Doctor Strange was surprised that the various different realities are given names and Palmer says that Strange is from Earth 616, making it canon in the MCU, being the first time the universe where the heroes are in have been given a name.

See, in the comics, the main timeline is also Earth 616 and there are other universes and realities where all sorts of things happen like that one where Wanda obliterates all of the mutants with just three words, or the ones which have been shown in What If..? where there is a reality where Ultron won, where Captain Carter became the super soldier, where Thor is an only child, and the likes.

All of these realities have a name, it follows a proper nomenclature of “Planet #” which indicates the place and the universe it is in. Given that the film talks about the multiverse in a larger scale, it is just right to have the different universes named because, really, it would be confusing it there wouldn’t be a name for each.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now in theaters.
