Doctor Strange Director Justifies Deleted Scene From the Movie

Blu-ray and DVD releases signal another thing besides bringing your favorite movies home to watch—deleted scenes. With Doctor Strange's DVD and Blu-ray set to release this month, it's expected that new teaser reels for these deleted scenes will appear.

Entertainment Weekly got its hands on the new reel wherein Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen) summons Dormammu. This particular excerpt, he and his followers attempt to summon the evil being from the Dark Dimension.

However, one of his followers doesn't seem to share in the belief that the ritual will work. Even if Kaecilius believes in his faith that the ritual will go smoothly, the follower feels that it's more important to make sure that deciphering the writings become their priority.

The doubting one doesn't get the burning insignia on his forehead, and that makes Kaecilius summon something else entirely—a sword to give him an "unnatural" death.

This seems to be a telling attitude and action for Kaecilius, but when talking about cutting the part out, director Scott Derrickson stated that it was just the natural progression of things.

"Pauline Kael used to always talk about the director needing to know where the audience wants to be, and at that point of the movie, the audience didn't want to be jumping around, they wanted to stay with Strange, who's on this very interesting, very personal, and very dramatic journey. The intrusion of those scenes was breaking up the soul of the movie in a way that just wasn't necessary. We didn't need it."

What's more, Derrickson said that the movie didn't lose anything when they decided to cut the scenes. If anything, removing them ensured that there was more power in the major arc of the character."

Doctor Strange will be out on Digital HD and Disney Movies Anywhere on Feb. 14, while the Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, Digital SD, DVD, and VOD will be out on Feb. 28.
