Doctor Strange 2 Writer Confirms Initial Talks to Include Tom Cruise as Iron Man

Prior to the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there were numerous rumors that Tom Cruise will be appearing in the film playing Iron Man from an alternate universe. However, it ended up being debunked weeks before the release. Now, as it turns out, there were initial talks at the very beginning for the megastar to appear in the film.

Speaking with Rolling Stone, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron shut down the rumors by confirming that they didn't shoot any footage of Cruise as Iron Man. However, he did reveal that there were early conversations to possibly include the actor in the film although the idea didn't come to fruition.

"Yeah, that was totally made up. I mean, there’s no cut footage of Tom Cruise!," he said. "But I love Tom Cruise, and I said to [Marvel Studios president] Kevin [Feige] at one point, I was like, Could we get Tom Cruise’s Iron Man? I remember reading about that in Ain’t It Cool News back in the day, that Tom Cruise was going to be Iron Man."

When asked if they actually approached the actor for the role, he confirmed that it didn't reach that stage since they knew that he was busy filming the next Mission: Impossible movies. He said, "I don’t believe so. I just don’t think it was ever an option, because of availability."

It is interesting to hear that they did actually consider the idea of having Cruise appear as an alternate universe Iron Man in the film as a nod during the time when he was in consideration to play the character in the first Iron Man film. However, it looks like it turned into an internet rumor that became widely discussed and speculated by fans before it was debunked and it is curious to find out how it was able to spread despite not actually going beyond the initial talks stage.
