Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness finally made its way to theaters after months of speculations and excitement from fans who have been looking forward to the sorcerer's next adventure in the MCU. Now, the opening weekend box office numbers are out and it looks like a lot of people flocked to their favorite theaters to see the latest MCU entry.

According to Deadline, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness won the domestic opening weekend box office as it earned $187 million ushering in a great start for the summer box office season. It is also the highest one so far this year, the best opening for director Sam Raimi, and it doubled the first film's numbers which had an opening of $85 million.

With that number, it now holds the spot of the 11th best domestic debut of all time after Avengers: Age of Ultron which opened with $191.2 million. It is also the second-highest during the pandemic era after Spider-Man: No Way Home which had an opening of $260 million.

It is not surprising to hear the film getting high box office results given the hype and anticipation prior to the release and it just shows that a lot of people did tune in to see the film immediately in theaters as soon as it got released. It would be interesting to see if the box office numbers will hold up in the next several weeks and possibly hit the billion-dollar mark. So far, the film has grossed $450 million worldwide.

These numbers are easily a win for Marvel and Disney as they were around their projected figures prior to the release. Along with the 75% Rotten Tomatoes critics score and the B+ CinemaScore, it is safe to say now that the film was well-received in all places and we can declare it a great success. It's also good news for the tentpole films that will be released during the summer season as it is an indication that people are geared up to go to theaters.
