Doctor Strange 2: Elizabeth Olsen Says Embracing Scarlet Witch's Dark Side was 'Empowering'

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness may have had some light and comedic moments but the Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel also happened to be one of the darkest films in the franchise. So it's no surprise that the movie had its main antagonist deliver some of her darkest moments yet. However, it looks like Elizabeth Olsen didn't have a problem with all that as she admits that embracing Scarlet Witch's dark side was actually "empowering" for her!

Elizabeth Olsen already played up the darker side of Wanda Maximoff in WandaVision and she confirmed with HollywoodLife that this is something that she aims to do with the character.

"My goal is to always have her have some sort of evolution, and the evolution in this for me was really empowering," Olsen said of Wanda.

“She has a new kind of confidence that we haven’t seen in 8 years, and she’s really not apologizing for anything,” she continued. “She feels very clear in her beliefs. I find it very admirable, and I enjoyed throwing her into this journey of madness. I think it’s okay to play characters that people get frustrated with sometimes. I enjoy that as an actor.”

Wanda certainly was different in Doctor Strange 2 and fans who have followed the character's story arc all this time would understand why she is doing what she does in the film. Still, her dark side isn't the only thing that makes Scarlet Witch an interesting character and we're hoping to see more of her in future MCU projects. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is directed by Sam Raimi and also stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Xochitl Gomez, Benedict Wong, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The film is still screening in theaters worldwide.
