Disney's Response to Solo: A Star Wars Story Underperforming on its Opening Weekend

Lucasfilm and Disney were hoping that Solo: A Star Wars Story would earn upwards of $100 million on its opening weekend, but the movie has somehow underperformed at only $83 million. With the movie being one of the most anticipated for the year, Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis gives a comment as to why Solo is not making the bank they were aiming for.

Hollis said (via ComicBookMovie):

"it's surprising for the film to have not done the business as we have hoped… It's disappointing when tracking is unpredictable when you get to levels like this and setting up expectations outside of where the film is landing. But, we come into a Memorial Day that's doing a ton of business for the industry, and the last four weeks have been the biggest."

It's great for the business. Sure, Deadpool 2 jumping in front of the release and how available people turned out this weekend are factors, but with Solo we have a film that's well received with great exits, and we have nothing in front of us for two weekends. We'll measure the success of Solo at its finish."

A lot of people are considering other factors to why the movie didn't do so well on its opening weekend. For one, it had to compete with two other blockbusters this month, Infinity War and Deadpool 2. The movie also clearly started marketing way too late at February; and top all that off with mixed reviews from critics.

Personally, I thought the film was fantastic. After the emotionally heavy film that was Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Solo was the perfect follow-up with a light-hearted adventure packed with fun characters and dazzling visuals. Hopefully everyone ends up checking the movie out for themselves because I would hate for Solo to become notorious for being a flop.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is now out in theaters.
