Hollywood's favorite archaeologist will be back in 2019.
Disney officially announced today that Harrison Ford is set to reprise his role as Dr. Henry Walton "Indiana" Jones in the 5thIndiana Jones movie. Steven Spielberg will once again helm the fantasy adventure movie.
The Walt Disney Studios Chairman, Alan Horn, stated in a press release:
Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can't wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019. It's rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn't be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.
In December last year, Disney's Bob Iger confirmed that a new Indiana Jones is already in the works, but the company's current announcement is the first official one which includes the returning star and director, as well as the release date.
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy will produce the film together with Frank Marshall.
The Indiana Jones movie franchise is part of Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm. The first four films combined grossed nearly $2 billion worldwide. Incidentally, Disney/Lucasfilm topped that number with Star Wars: The Force Awakens alone.
Created by George Lucas as a tribute to the action heroes of the 1930's, Indiana Jones has long been considered the pioneer of modern action/adventure films. Ford's perfect portrayal of the archaeologist/explorer also became the launchpad for later archaeologist/explorer characters such as Nathan Drake and Lara Croft.
In addition, Spielberg's cinematic style in helming the franchise has continued to influence adventure films of today, including The Force Awakens.
It's so cool to finally hear an official word from Disney about Indy 5. While the first three films featured some of the most iconic moments in cinematic history which millions have come to love, the fourth installment underwhelmed critics and audiences. Hopefully, with Disney on board, Indy 5 won't disappoint this time.
Indiana Jones 5 will hit the big screen on July 19, 2019.
