Disney's Cruella Causes DC's Harley Quinn to Trend on Twitter

Disney recently released its first main trailer for Cruella. This led to another character from another major franchise trending on Twitter. Shortly after the trailer was released, fans were able to immediately made comparisons with Emma Stone's Cruella de Vil and DC's antihero Harley Quinn. Fans pointed out comparisons with the two characters' aesthetics and tone. Some fans even called Cruella Disney's Harley Quinn.

The newly released trailer for Cruella has fans on Twitter reeling on the similarity of tone and approach to Harley Quinn's Birds of Prey and the Joker as well. The trailer release was flocked with many Harley tweets which made the character trend on Twitter.

Disney's Cruella will be an origin story about the infamous 101 Dalmatian villain. This movie will also offer the perspective of the villainess which can lead the way into a possible anti-hero point of view than a straight-up villain.

Cruella is directed by Australian director Craig Gillespie, who is probably best known for directing I, Tonya. It is the movie that led to Margot Robbie's nomination for a Best Actress Oscar. The coincidental part is that Robbie also plays Harley, for which people compare Cruella.

Some fans noted that the trailer seemed to closely resemble the tone of Birds of Prey. The movie is making the hero at the center of a story, serving as the agent of chaos attempting to free the bonds from which she has been placed by society.

Both Harley Quinn and the Joker were trending alongside Cruella as more fans continue sharing remarks of the many similarities they find. Other fans dubbed Cruella as Disney's Joker. Some fans use the comparisons favorably, while there are some criticizing Disney for "copying" Harley or Joker, although it has to be noted, that being derivative is not entirely bad as most works of art borrow concepts from other works.

Cruella is set to be released on May 28, 2021.
