Disney has unveiled several images of Emma Stone who is portraying the iconic villainess, Cruella de Vil in the upcoming origin story for the character. The images portray Cruella in her element, wearing fashionable clothes.
Entertainment Weekly released the images and talked with the movie's director, Craig Gillespie. The director spoke about the costume design, stating that since the movie is set in a fashion world, the costumes are much more complicated. Many people will have their "fashion lens" which is why they are running the risk of taking out the viewer of the film they will not buy whatever the film is selling.
"We're in a fashion world. That made it much more complicated because everybody's going to have their fashion lens on as well. [We] run the risk of it taking you out of the film if you're not buying what they're selling."
The costume designer of the film is Oscar winner Jenny Beavan who worked on projects like Mad Max: Fury Road and A Room with a View. Beavan explained that in the film, it is quite clear how Cruella develops on who she is. The viewers will get the journey of her life in the clothes she is wearing. She explained that the costumes evolve in the film with Cruella's clothes becoming sharper and more tailored.
"It's quite clear in the story how [Cruella] develops, so you've got a good arc to her life in clothes. As she becomes crueler and Cruella-er, she becomes sharper and more tailored."

Cruella did not begin at the top. She was once an aspiring fashion designer named Estelle de Vil. She began working under Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson). The Baroness is the head of the prestigious fashion house in London.
