Disney+ Purges Lucasfilm Series from the Service

Late last year, Lucasfilm's TV series sequel of Willow finally premiered on Disney+ after years of being in the works. However, unlike the other tentpole shows that premiered on the streamer, Willow didn't become a huge hit despite the positive critical reception.

As a result, the series ended up getting canceled last March although creator Jonathan Kasdan insisted that it was just on hiatus and it might still continue in the future. Unfortunately, it looks like that won't be the case anymore.

According to Deadline, Disney+ and Hulu are set to purge numerous original films, TV shows, and specials on May 26 as part of Disney's efforts to cut costs and it comes with a content impairment charge of $1.5 billion to $1.8 billion which was announced in its recent earnings call.

"We are in the process of reviewing the content on our DTC services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation," CFO Christine McCarthy said during the announcement.

Willow is among the numerous TV shows that are part of the streamer's purge despite ending its run less than six months ago. It is the only Lucasfilm-produced project that is affected by the situation.

Other shows that are part of the purge are Big Shot, Turner & Hooch, The Mysterious Benedict Society, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, Diary of a Future President, The World According to Jeff Goldblum, and many more.

It is unknown yet whether the soon-to-remove original movies and shows will move to other streamers and networks where the audience will be able to watch them or they'll just be lost forever.

HBO Max, AMC, and Showtime have done similar actions a while ago as they also removed original content from their respective services in order to cut costs

We might hear more details about this latest streamer purge in the coming days or weeks, but the news has already caused some uproar amongst fans and the creators behind the projects.
