Star Wars fans are going to have to say goodbye to the luxury of having one Star Wars movie a year because it looks like the Mickey Mouse House is planning to slow down the release of its Star Wars projects.
Disney CEO Bob Iger just recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the company's various plans for the future, including the future of the Star Wars franchise. Though Disney has no intention of putting a stop to the production of Star Wars films, it looks like the company is planning to take it slow this time around with Iger admitting that the decision to push Lucasfilm to roll out at least one Star Wars movie a year was a mistake.
"I made the timing decision, and as I look back, I think the mistake that I made — I take the blame — was a little too much, too fast. You can expect some slowdown, but that doesn't mean we're not gonna make films. J.J. [Abrams] is busy making [Episode] IX. We have creative entities, including [Game of Thrones creators David] Benioff and [D.B.] Weiss, who are developing sagas of their own, which we haven't been specific about. And we are just at the point where we're gonna start making decisions about what comes next after J.J.'s. But I think we're gonna be a little bit more careful about volume and timing. And the buck stops here on that."
Though Iger didn't give out that many details about the Star Wars slowdown, it seems like there might not be a guarantee that there's going to be a Star Wars movie in 2020 after the release of Star Wars: Episode IX next year. Given the state of the franchise and the fanbase right now, it looks like Disney's made the right choice slowing down the release of Star Wars films. Sure, fans might not like the news as much, but this gives Lucasfilm time to properly produce and market their projects, avoiding flops like with what happened with Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Star Wars: Episode IX hits cinemas December 20, 2019.
