Comic book movies are currently the biggest blockbusters in Hollywood, thanks to the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe. However, there was a time when Disney released a superhero film only to watch it flop. Sky High was released in 2005 and is pretty much forgotten these days. Interestingly, the House of Mouse had actually planned a sequel for the movie and its director Mike Mitchell really wants to work on it.
Mitchell directed Sky High back in 2005 but he has moved on since then. Although he has just finished work on The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Mitchell admits that he wishes the Kurt Russell film got the sequel it deserved.
"I am hugely proud of it and they should make it a franchise," Mitchell told io9. He then added some interesting details about a possible sequel.
"In fact the same writers that didn't get credit on it, [Jonathan] Aibel and [Glenn] Berger, they did a lot of writing on that film, and we have a whole sequel that's called Save U [which stands for] Save University," Mitchell continued. "[But] the only way you can do it is if you bring back all [the actors]. Mary Elizabeth Winstead has to be in it. Michael Angarano, Kurt Russell has to come back. But that was such a fun film to make."
So what was the reason behind Sky High not being a hit? Mitchell revealed that it was released at a bad time when it was up against several family films. Nevertheless, he is eager to work on a sequel as long as everybody else is on board.
"Dude, I'm ready to go," Mitchell said. "It's up to you. Just write that it's happening."
