Disney Infinity Video Game Series, Which Include Marvel and Star Wars Sets, Discontinued

Disney has cancelled its venture into the video game publishing business as it announced the end of the Disney Infinity game series on Tuesday.

Avalanche Software, the company's internal game studio, debuted Disney Infinity back in 2013. The video game series sees the unique combination of plot-motivated game play and action figures from different popular franchises of Disney and Pixar such as Pirates of Caribbean, Toy Story, Frozen, Marvel, and even Star Wars films.

With the game series, popular characters like Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Rey, and Ahsoka Tano may be purchased as Disney Infinity figures in stores, after which they are made playable in the game when new updates come out.

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that the cancellation of the game is due to financial reasons:

[The video game] business is a changing business. We did not have enough confidence in the business in terms of it being stable enough.

John Blackburn, Studio Vice President and General Manager, made the following statement via a Disney Interactive blog post:

From the beginning, Disney Infinitywas built for you — our fans — and I wanted to take a moment to thank you not just for your support over the years, but for creating a community that madeDisney Infinitymore than just a game.
Our goal for Disney Infinity was to bring the best of Disney storytelling to life in homes around the world, and with your support we accomplished that. We hope you had as much fun playing the game as we had making it.

On a lighter note, there's usually a new, sometimes better project involved when one is cancelled.

Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media chairman John Pitaro did say that Disney will be shifting to a licensing model, so let's keep our fingers crossed.
