Disney CEO Teases The Extent of The Star Wars Franchise’s Expansion

Star Wars fans know that Disney is going to stretch the franchise as far as it can go – not only has the studio revived the saga with a new sequel trilogy with its third film in production, but it's also started expanding the cinematic universe with spin-off movies like Rogue One.

Now, after giving a talk at the USC Mashall School of Business (via SlashFilm), Disney CEO Bob Iger promises fans that the studio is currently working on Star Wars material that could run on till 2032.

"We're just starting to talk about what happens to Star Wars after [Episode] 9. It's way too early, and certainly nothing that I can reveal, but we've got a creative team actually thinking about what could be another decade and a half of Star Wars stories. It's kind of mind-blowing to spend an afternoon with a creative team talking about that. Where could you go, where should we go?"

While it's great to hear that Disney and Lucasfilm are already prepping up for "another decade and a half of Star Wars stories," what's more interesting is that Iger used the phrase "stories" instead of "films" or "movies." Lucasfilm has already been thinking of expanding beyond the Legacy characters, and this phrase could mean that the studio would be bring out more spinoffs and standalones. That, or the studio could also mean more animated series, or even a live action television show. We'll just have to wait and see.

Lucasfilm's next movie, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is scheduled to premiere on Dec. 15, 2017.
