Disney CEO Explains Why Game Of Thrones Showrunners Preferred Star Wars Films Instead Of A Series

Star Wars fans are certainly having an interesting week. Not only has Lucasfilm finally released the trailers and posters for its highly anticipated Star Wars spinoff, Solo: A Star Wars Story, it's also announced that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were being recruited to write and produce their own series of Star Wars films.

Though some were glad to hear that Benioff and Weiss were being brought into the Star Wars franchise, others were a bit surprised that the two were working on films instead of a television series.

An investor had the same question during Disney's first quarter earnings call for 2018 (via Comic Book) and according to Mickey Mouse House CEO Bob Iger, the Game of Thrones showrunner were actually the ones interested in working on a series of films for Star Wars.

"Their interest was in creating a series of films that are Star Wars based," Iger explained. "And we've actually been talking to them a long time. They are focused on a point in time in the Star Wars mythology and taking it from there."

Apparently the possibility of a Star Wars TV series by Benioff and Weiss was never in the cards during their talks, and during the earnings call Iger teased that the two already have an idea about what kind of Star Wars story they want to tell. The only question left, is whether fans will get to know more about the Game of Thrones showrunner's Star Wars movies soon.
