Disney Cancels Artemis Fowl Premiere, Film to Stream on Disney+ Instead

There is little doubt that the Coronavirus outbreak has already delayed the premiere of several films but it looks like Artemis Fowl is the pandemic's first real casualty. The highly anticipated adaptation of Eoin Colfer's novels will no longer be getting a theatrical release and will be available for streaming on Disney+ instead.

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Disney now has new plans for its upcoming projects. For instance, Mulan will be getting a new release date on July 24. However, Artemis Fowl's theatrical premiere has officially been cancelled and the film is heading straight to Disney+.

It's a surprising move from Disney yet it also makes sense considering the current situation. Ricky Strauss, President, Content & Marketing for Disney+, addressed the decision in a press release.

"With audiences largely unable to attend theatres in the current environment, we are thrilled to offer the premiere of Artemis Fowl on Disney+," Strauss said. "Director Kenneth Branagh and his spectacular cast take viewers right into the vibrant, fantasy world of the beloved book, which fans have been waiting to see brought to life onscreen for years. It's great family entertainment that is the perfect addition to Disney+'s summer lineup."

Although it's disappointing that we won't get to see the movie on the big screen, it's still good to know that Artemis Fowl will finally get released. After all, the film has been delayed several times and it's a relief to know that it will finally be shown.

Artemis Fowl was scheduled for a theatrical release on May 29. Disney has not yet revealed when the film will begin streaming on Disney+.
