Director Terry Gilliam Says Marvel Movies are Repetitive, Slams Black Panther

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has one of the biggest fandoms in the world. And while it is a big franchise, not everyone is exactly fond of the projects they put out. Following directors Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola's comments on Marvel movies, it seems like another director has joined the list.

In a recent interview with Indie Wire, Monty Python alum Terry Gilliam expressed his thoughts on Marvel movies in various aspects. One being their dominance at the box office. "They're taking all the money that should be available for a greater variety of films," he said. However, he made it clear that they are "brilliant" and he can't fault them in what they do, especially with the "incredible" amount of "technical skills" involved in making them.

That being said, he also pointed out that Marvel movies should deal with reality "a bit more." Gilliam thinks that the message the movies put out is that we have to be superheroes to do anything "worthwhile," which is something he doesn't "like" and makes him "crazy." "And to me, it's not confronting the reality of, you know, quote-unquote human condition," he added.

He points out that while these movies are a "sheer spectacle," the director thinks they are "repetitive." "You still have to blow up another city," he said.

In addition, Gilliam also admitted that he didn't like Black Panther, which is a movie that people appreciated for its diversity and inclusion. "I hated Black Panther. It makes me crazy," he said. "It gives young black kids the idea that this is something to believe in. Bulls--t. It's utter bulls--t."

Gilliams thinks the people who made the movie have never been to Africa, and that they just got "some stylist for some African pattern fabrics and things." But he also hated the movie, partly because "the media were going on about the importance of bulls--t."

While most fans will disagree with Gilliam, it is important to note that everyone has their own preferences and opinions about certain movies, and this is just the director's take on Marvel's.
