Director James Wan Says Aquaman 'Won't Be Very Dark' , Weighs in on Batman v Superman Backlash

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice bombed critically, and while it made a lot of money, it wasn't nearly what Warner Bros. and DC were hoping to bring in.

The film's overly-dark tone was one of the main reasons did poorly. Its current aggregate score at Rotten Tomatoes is 27 percent, with the site writing that the film "smothers a potentially powerful story — and some of America's most iconic superheroes — in a grim whirlwind of effects-driven action."

Now Warner Bros. seems to be taking action to avoid Batman v Superman's pitfalls by ensuring that the future DC cinematic universe films aren't so dark. The James Wan-directed Aquaman film, set to release in 2018, is no exception. Not much has been revealed about Wan's film, but one thing is for sure: it won't adopt the same style of Zack Snyder's films. Here's what Wan told Entertainment Weekly:

"It won't be very dark," Wan says when asked how the movie's tone would compare with Batman v Superman. He goes on to say, "It [the movie] is at the bottom of the ocean, so I'll use a lot of light."

It's clear that Wan is aware of Batman v Superman's reputation, and it looks like the future DC universe films will stray away from Snyder's approach.

During an interview with BadTaste.it, director James Wan was asked what he thought about the backlash against Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Here's what he said:

"I think it's a world that is so difficult to control, and always expectations of fans are out of this world, right? No pun intended. I know how hard it is, from making Conjuring 2, how much anticipation there is just from the first movie. I think you do the best you can, and tell the best story you can."

Aquaman is set to release on July 27, 2018, and it will be the second post-Justice League DC film, after The Flash.
