Barbara "Babe" Paley passed away on July 6, 1978, just a day after her 63rd birthday.

She had died in her apartment in New York City.

Her death, however, did not come as a surprise. After all, she had been diagnosed with lung cancer four years prior to that day. When she knew that her time was limited, she even started planning her own funeral party.

When Babe died, she was survived by her husband, Bill, and her children, William, Kate, Stanley, and Amanda. She also left behind her three siblings.

The funeral that she organized was held at Christ Episcopal Church in Manhasset, Long Island.

Although we see Capote (played by Tom Hollander) visiting Babe's (played by Naomi Watts) grave in Feud: Capote vs the Swans episode 8, there is no recorded evidence that Capote paid her grave a visit.

In the episode, Capote brings a bouquet of flowers to his old friend. In the scene, it is revealed that Capote is already three months sober. Despite this, he tells her that he may be joining her soon. He asks: "Let me in?"

After Capote's published exposé on Esquire, Babe never spoke to her friend again. It was also public knowledge that she never forgave him.

He was also not invited to her funeral, which proves that neither Babe nor Bill ever forgave Capote.

In the FX series, however, there was a scene in episode 4 of Babe and Capote's interaction. This was either a dream sequence or a made-up scenario as Babe was speaking to her therapist.

Babe had no interest in speaking to Capote ever again.

As Naomi Watts explained in an interview, there was a time when "she wanted to," but she became "more fragile" when she was getting closer to the end. Not to mention, she was held back by Slim from forgiving Capote.

"She certainly softened and she certainly missed him deeply, but it was a really hard decision for her to not forgive and not go back."
