Detective Pikachu Movie Will Now Be Distributed By Warner Bros Instead of Universal

It looks like some changes are coming to the Ryan Reynolds-starring Detective Pikachu, also known as the weirdest adaptation coming to cinemas next year. While it will still be under Legendary Pictures, Universal will no longer be distributing the movie. Since Legendary's deal with Universal is expiring at the end of the year, Warner Bros. will now be distributing this film.

Yup, the two companies are getting back together after parting ways back in 2013, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Apparently, part of the reason why Legendary and Universal won't be working together again is due to the box office failure of Skyscraper. Even with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as the star, it didn't improve the film's critical rating, which likely led to the disappointing box office.

While Warner Bros. will be distributing the film, they will not be changing the movie's May 10 release date. This is pretty shocking since this will be the second-week Avengers 4 will be showing. It looks like the executives are hoping that fans of the Pokemon franchise invest in the movie.

Based on the 3DS game, Detective Pikachu has a talking version of the popular mascot solving crimes and voiced by Ryan Reynolds. The movie will compete with various 2019 blockbusters, including Avengers 4 and John Wick: Chapter 3.
