Kyojuro Rengoku is currently the most popular Hashira, thanks to the awesome first episode of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Season 2. But is he also the most powerful Hashira in the Demon Slayer Corps? Some believe that Giyu Tomioka might be stronger than the Flame Hashira so let's look into their strengths and weaknesses.
In Demon Slayer, Giyu is the first Hashira fans encountered although we didn't know about his rank when we see him. Giyu is introduced in the manga's first chapter (and the anime's first episode) and he plays a pivotal role in Tanjiro's journey to joining the Demon Slayer Corps.
Early on, it is clear that Giyu is a strong warrior as he almost kills Nezuko and easily incapacitates her when she tries to attack him. Giyu's strength and speed are proven again when he effortlessly takes down the Lower Five demon Rui on Mount Natagumo.
But does this mean Giyu is more powerful than Rengoku? After all, the Water Hashira didn't even break a sweat while facing a member of the Twelve Kizuki while Rengoku struggled when he fought Akaza in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie - Mugen Train. Surely, this means that Giyu should have been the one sent to handle the situation on the train.
Although Giyu is clearly a strong warrior, it is important to point out that Rengoku went up against a member of the Upper Ranks. Akaza is Upper Rank Three while Rui was a member of the Lower Ranks. The Upper Rank demons are decidedly more powerful than the Lower Ranks and there is no evidence yet that Giyu can take on someone in Muzan Kibutsuji's strongest demons.
Sadly, we won't be able to see Rengoku take a second shot at defeating an Upper Rank. On the other hand, that's an opportunity that we might see for Giyu in the latter part of Demon Slayer Season 2.
The premiere episode of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Season 2 aired on October 10. The second episode titled Deep Slumber will be broadcast on October 17, 2021.
