Demon Slayer: Mugen Train Breaks Ponyo's DVD Sale Record

There is little doubt that Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie - Mugen Train has been breaking records since its original release back in 2020. So it's no surprise that the anime film's home release is dominating in Japan, this time derailing Studio Ghibli's Ponyo DVD sales record. In addition to that, Mugen Train has already sold over 1.7 million in DVDs and Blu-ray in this week alone!

The Demon Slayer movie's DVD and Blu-ray were finally released on Monday, December 20 and it didn't take long for fans to buy a staggering number of copies. According to Oricon, the regular edition of Mugen Train sold 633,000 copies on DVD and 459,000 copies on Blu-ray. This is good enough to take the first spot for both categories.

The numbers might not surprise fans who pre-ordered the home release but it certainly broke a major record in Japan. Mugen Train has just defeated Ponyo as the current anime film to rank first on the DVD chart. In addition to that, the Demon Slayer movie dethroned the Studio Ghibli film for selling over 500,000 DVD copies.

The Mugen Train limited edition also sold 183,000 DVD copies and 368,000 Blu-ray copies. That brings the Demon Slayer movie's grand total of home release sales to 1,714,000 copies sold, a stunning feat considering that the DVDs and Blu-ray have only been released less than a week.

At this point, the Demon Slayer franchise seems set for major success in the near future. There is a possibility that there will be more Mugen Train releases and are expected to do just as well soon. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
