Delicious in Dungeon continues to be one of winter 24’s highlights. For fans who want to get more insight into its creation, the Delicious in Dungeon creator recently shared the inspirations behind the hit fantasy series.

The manga’s author, Ryoko Kui, was interviewed recently in Famitsu, a Japanese weekly video games magazine.

Being interviewed in a video game publication may be unexpected, but it makes sense given how Kui is a big fan of games.

Not to mention that certain classic role-playing games (RPGs) are among the series’ main inspirations.

When the Delicious in Dungeon anime adaptation by Trigger began, many fans became interested in Ryoko Kui and her manga. Some even uncovered fan art made by Kui for Baldur’s Gate 3.

Thus, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Kui is a big fan of games. In her recent Famitsu interview, she mentioned a wide array of games she likes.

Interestingly, Kui only got into playing video games when her work began serialization. Previously, she only stuck to playing turn-based RPGs, especially those with a top-down perspective.

She was a big fan of fantasy even before her gaming journey began, as she mentioned reading fantasy novels like The Lord of the Rings and The Neverending Story.

As she played more games though, Kui started to play other titles. She mentioned that she got into The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which she played on a Switch she borrowed from her editor.

Other games she enjoyed included Red Dead Redemption 2, God of War, The Witcher 3, and Cyberpunk 2077 (which is one of her all-time favorites).

These modern games aren’t the inspirations for Delicious in Dungeon. Instead, her series is heavily inspired by classic RPGs her dad played on the Famicom such as Dragon Quest, Ultima, and Fire Emblem.

The biggest inspiration though is Wizardry, the iconic video game series from the 80s. Kui said that she watched her dad play these games even though they’re not the most exciting games to watch.

She continued to do so as the illustrations on the games’ walkthroughs helped her imagine various scenes.

Along with these classic video games, Kui also said that she studied the dungeon crawler Legend of Grimrock, which was released back in 2012.

Finally, Kui confirmed that Dungeons & Dragons was another big source of inspiration, as she read the rule books, novels, and other materials while researching for her series.

The Delicious in Dungeon anime continues to get new episodes weekly on Netflix.
