Deadpool Creator Slams DC, Says They Need to Start Over to Catch Up with Marvel

I think it's no secret to a lot of fans that the DC Extended Universe has been struggling since day one in terms of consistency and cohesiveness but give credit where credit is due as Warner Bros. has also proven that it's possible for them to make the franchise great as long as they're willing to listen to the fans and to the people involved in making their films. This is why James Gunn's The Suicide Squad became a sure-fire hit and it just might be the DCEU's best offering yet.

However, despite all the hype and rave reviews, the DCEU flick has performed underwhelmingly at the box office most likely due to the rising cases of the COVID-19 delta variant in the US. Still, it managed to become the second most-viewed day-and-date movie on HBO Max.

But according to Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld, the current pandemic situation isn't to blame for The Suicide Squad not being able to live up to box office expectations. Taking to Twitter (via ComicBookMovie), Liefeld said that DC is a "damaged brand" and even compared it to Marvel which he believes "has pulled away in such spectacular fashion and DC has lost ground on all platforms." Unsurprisingly, the comic book icon drew flak for his controversial take and ultimately took down the tweet.

While I don't agree with Liefeld's statement 100%, I gotta agree that WB and DC Films have a lot of work to do to "rebuild" the DCEU. Again, it all goes down to consistency and the studio not being overly involved with the director's decisions. I mean, take Zack Snyder's Justice League, for example, it did extremely well because the director was the one calling the shots. The same can be said about The Suicide Squad as James Gunn was given free rein over the project.

The Suicide Squad is now showing in cinemas. It's also available for streaming on HBO Max.
