DC's Swamp Thing Star Hopes to Get Invited Back for the Reboot

DC Universe’s 2019 Swamp Thing series could have had the chance to offer more to its viewers if it wasn't cancelled almost as quickly after the first episode was broadcast. This deadly blow came after the series' original 13-episode order had been trimmed to 10. Warner Bros. cited "creative differences" as the cause of the cancellation, although many DC fans argued that the network underestimated the show's flourishing impact.

One of DC's series stars, Virginia Madsen, revealed to ComicBook.com that the series cancellation remains a great disappointment, yet despite her dismay, she persists in staying hopeful that she will get invited back for the show's reboot film.

“Can you imagine how bummed out I was? I was ready to buy a house in Wilmington [where the show filmed]. And everyone was so close because we were setting the stage for a long run. We got to lean on each other and became a family in that kind of situation when you're in that kind of [project]. Everyone was ready and it was kind of like the proverbial rug being swept out from underneath you and I really felt it didn't make sense. It didn't make sense at all. There was no explaining it. I just had this sort of hang over my head and went home and ate a lot of comfort foods for a few months … but yes, it was a great disappointment.” Madsen narrated.

When asked if she’d be returning for the upcoming Swamp Thing movie, “I would doubt it,” she said. “I think that kind of director is going to make it his own. If anything, I wish that they would bring Derek into the movie because he had so much heart.” Derek Mears portrayed Swamp Thing in the TV series. “Nobody can kill Swamp Thing. That's why they're making it into a movie with James Gunn. It's going to be awesome.” concluded Madsen.

Even though the Swamp Thing series only lasted one season, the character's story is far from over. Earlier this year, James Gunn confirmed that a Swamp Thing feature is on the way from DC Studios, with the film anticipated to delve into the character's dark beginnings.

“The final film we want to talk about is Swamp Thing,” Gunn said during his announcement. “And we bring it up because it's important to point out that in these stories, although interconnected, they're not all tonally the same. Each set of filmmakers brings their aesthetic to these films, and the fun is seeing how these tonally different works mash-up in the future. This is a film that will investigate the dark origins of Swamp Thing.”

The Swamp Thing movie is yet to receive its release date.
