DC's Blue Beetle: Susan Sarandon Replaces Sharon Stone as the Villain

One of the upcoming films in the DCEU films that have been in the works is Blue Beetle which will feature the debut of the Jaime Reyes iteration of the titular hero in the franchise. For the past several weeks, we've been hearing a lot of updates regarding the project including the initial casting of Sharon Stone who was set to play the villain. However, as it turns out, that is no longer the case as she is now replaced by another actress.

According to TheWrap, Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon has closed the deal to join the cast of Blue Beetle. She will be playing the villain Victoria Kord, a character that is created for the film. Stone was previously in talks for the role, but it fell through due to unknown reasons.

Angel Manuel Soto is set to direct the film from Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer’s screenplay. John Rickard serves as the producer. Sarandon is joining the ensemble that already includes Xolo Maridueña, Harvey Guillen, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Belissa Escobedo, Bruna Marquezin, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Raoul Max Trujillo.

While Victoria Kord is a newly-created character for the film, she does share the last name as Ted Kord, one of the characters who took the mantle of Blue Beetle in the comics. There have been speculations that Victoria might be related to Ted and their connection has something to do with her villainous role in the film especially now with Jaime Reyes taking the mantle of the hero.

Sarandon is known for starring in well-known films such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Atlantic City, Bull Durham, Thelma & Louise, Lorenzo's Oil, Dead Man Walking (where she won an Oscar), Stepmom, Enchanted, Speed Racer, The Lovely Bones, Cloud Atlas, and A Bad Moms Christmas. Recently, she starred in the limited series Feud: Bette and Joan and appeared in two seasons of Ray Donovan. She is set to play the lead in the upcoming series Monarch.

While it is unfortunate to hear that Stone is no longer going to play the villain, Sarandon is definitely a great replacement as she is an Oscar-caliber talent and it's always great to see someone in her level join a comic book property. It is exciting to see what she'll do in her villain role and find out as well if the theory regarding her character's connection to Ted Kord might be true after all.
