David Ayer Upset Following James Gunn's The Suicide Squad Revelation

James Gunn's decision to "jump ship" to the DC Extended Universe to helm The Suicide Squad came as a huge shock to a lot of comic book film fans but what was once Marvel Studios' loss became Warner Bros. Pictures' gain.

What's even more shocking is the fact that WB, a production company known for meddling with its directors' vision apparently gave the Guardians of the Galaxy director free rein when it comes to the project's creative direction.

Taking to Twitter, James recalled his meeting with WB executives and when the project was presented to him, he said right off the bat that The Suicide Squad needs to be R-rated to which the company surprisingly agreed.

He explains: "When I first met with @wbpictures & @DCComics about #TheSuicideSquad I said it would need to be an R-rated war film with no-holds-barred. I am always upfront with partners about what I want to do. They agreed. Once the rules were set we were off & running. I love this movie."

Gunn's revelation caught the attention of the director of the "original" Suicide Squad film David Ayer who seemingly aired his shock and disappointment at how Gunn's vision for his film was easily greenlit. Retweeting Gunn's post, Ayer simply said "Dang".

Before things got out of hand, James replied to David's tweet and credited the director for paving the way for him to realize his true vision for The Suicide Squad.

There seems to be no bad blood between Gunn and Ayer and I'm pretty sure David's tweet wasn't directed at James' statement but rather to the executives of Warner Bros. and DC who have been a huge pain in his you-know-where when they were filming the first Suicide Squad project.

I'm 100% positive that Gunn will do Ayer proud with his version of the film but I'm still hoping that WB will finally give the director what he wants and that is the #AyerCut of the Suicide Squad.

The Suicide Squad hits HBO Max on August 6, 2021.
