Daredevil Actor Peter Shinkoda Reveals Marvel Television President’s Racism Against Asians

Marvel may have been making strides in supporting diversity and representation in its films and television series, but the media franchise still has a long, long way to go in eradicating racism and discrimination.

Speaking in a panel last Friday during a virtual #SaveDaredevilCon Event (via Insider), Daredevil Marvel Netflix series actor Peter Shinkoda revealed a very disturbing statement by Marvel Television President Jeph Loeb regarding race.

According to the Nobu actor, the Marvel Television executive once told Daredevil writers that they shouldn't really write for Asian characters like Nobu and Gao because "nobody cares about Chinese people and Asian people."

"I'm kind of reluctant to say this," Shinkoda began, "I just have to. I'm not into protecting certain things anymore. Jeph Loeb told the writers room not to write for Nobu and Gao, and this was reiterated many times by many of the writers and showrunners."

Quoting the Marvel executive, the actor revealed Loeb's true thoughts about Asian characters in Marvel.

"Nobody cares about Chinese people and Asian people. There were three previous Marvel movies, a trilogy called 'Blade' that was made where Wesley Snipes killed 200 Asians each movie. Nobody gives a s--- so don't write about Nobu and Gao,'" the actor recalled Loeb saying.

While Marvel Entertainment has yet to comment on this extremely racist quote by Loeb, there have been numerous complaints about Marvel's efforts at diversity and representation. Not only did Marvel fail GLAAD's test for LGBTQ representation, but Falcon and the Winter Soldier star Anthony Mackie has also expressed disappointment in the film's tepid efforts at inclusivity.
