Daisy Ridley to Star in Immersive VR Short Film Baba Yaga

After Star Wars, Daisy Ridley career is basically free to go where she pleases. She's done some more experimental films in the past, but now she's found herself attached to a VR short film.

According to Deadline, Ridley is set to co-star alongside Kate Winslet, Jennifer Hudson, and Glenn Close in an immersive short film called Baba Yaga. Here's the description:

The experience follows enigmatic witch Baba Yaga (Winslet) who uses her powers to stop the villagers whose settlement encroaches upon her enchanted Forest (Hudson). When the viewer's mother, the Chief (Close), falls ill, it is up to them and their sister Magda (Ridley) to enter the forbidden rainforest, uncover its hidden mysteries and get the cure from Baba Yaga.

Though Baba Yaga is mostly a horrific folk legend about a witch who eats children, I think this one is going to be a lot more kid-friendly. After all, the project is being directed by Eric Darnell who had been working on Madagascar films since 2005. Hudson herself is also attached to the project as an executive producer.

Hudson said about the project, "Baba Yaga is a beautiful work of animation and I was honored to be an executive producer alongside my talented collaborators at Baobab Studios… While the story is rooted in classic folklore, we were inspired to bring it into modern light by focusing on environmental themes and strong female characters, themes the world needs to explore now more than ever. It was my pleasure to be part of the strong female cast alongside Daisy, Kate, and Glenn."

While we don't have any idea for a wide release, Baba Yaga is said to be available exclusively on the Oculus Quest later in the year.
