MGM has released the trailer for the upcoming musical drama film Cyrano, based on Erica Schmidt's 2018 stage musical which itself is based on the classic 1987 Edmond Rostand play Cyrano de Bergerac. It stars Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage, Haley Bennett, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Bashir Salahuddin, and Captain Marvel actor Ben Mendelsohn. Joe Wright directed the film.
Just like the classic tale, the film focuses on Cyrano de Bergerac (Dinklage) who is in love with a woman named Roxanne (Bennett), but he thinks that his physical appearance is unworthy of her love. However, Roxanne falls in love with a man named Christian (Harrison Jr.), who in turn asks Cyrano to write his love letters to Roxanne for him. You can watch the trailer here:
The trailer looks beautiful as it highlights the gorgeous production design and the musical performances. We didn't get to see Dinklage sing in the trailer though, but it gave us a lot of glimpse of his take on Cyrano de Bergerac where it just looks like it's going to be an emotional and heartfelt performance. Bennett sounds great as we hear her sing. Harrison Jr. makes a wonderful impression as Christian. It just looks like it's going to be a musical that is worth seeing on the big screen because of the scale that they're doing.
For several years, we've known Dinklage for his iconic role as Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones. This one is certainly a very different role for him and a huge showcase of his range as an actor. It's also a musical role which is the first one that he's done on screen (not counting the Game of Thrones musical sketch that he did years ago).

The film has already screened at the Telluride Film Festival last month in which it received glowing responses from the critics. Dinklage's performances received unanimous praises and a lot of experts consider him as one of the major contenders for Best Actor at the Oscars.
Cyrano is set to be released in theaters this December.
