The Cyberpunk anime’s story may have ended, but fans are still not over the show’s tragic ending. Recently, fans were reminded of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ sad ending thanks to a melancholic fanart of Lucy in a gorgeous 80s style.

After the show’s release on Netflix back in September, Cyberpunk quickly became a fan favorite of both anime lovers and Cyberpunk 2077 players.

It has also spawned lots of impressive fanart and even creative mods for the game.

Lucy is one of Edgerunners’ main characters, and she was the love interest of protagonist David Martinez. Though even before the anime was released, fans were already loving her design based on the show’s previews.

In the story, Lucy meets David and invites him to be her partner. Though it’s revealed that Lucy just wanted to sell him out to Maine’s edgerunner crew, which she is a part of.

Instead of taking David’s Sandevistan and leaving him for dead, Maine takes David under his wing as he proves to be a capable edgerunner himself.

While David initially distrusts Lucy, the two quickly become close.

Soon, Lucy and David become a couple, though Lucy soon leaves the crew.

She wants David to leave as well, but David continues to lead the edgerunner crew at the cost of adding even more implants.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the series ends in tragedy, with David getting taken down by Adam Smasher. Eventually, David dies without any regrets as he was able to save Lucy.

In the end, Lucy is the only surviving member of the crew, and she is able to fulfill her dream of going to the moon.

However, she is still stricken with grief about what happened to David.

While there’s no announcement of a second season, for now, fans have begun making their own versions of what will happen to Lucy next.

One of these is this gorgeous 80s-style fanart by @hirohiro_gorira that imagines Lucy’s longing for David. The artwork features Lucy wearing David’s jacket.

This beautiful fanart got lots of attention on Twitter thanks in part to its emotional nature, as well as its impressive 80s style. This style is a perfect fit as cyberpunk works are deeply rooted in the 80s style.

Aside from getting lots of views and likes, it was even noticed by Rafal Jaki, Edgerunners’ showrunner, who thought the artwork was “super cool.”

Given the show’s continued popularity, it won’t be surprising to see Cyberpunk: Edgerunners get renewed for another season. Though there’s no indication yet that a Season 2 is in the pipeline.
