We were introduced to Brock Rumlow a.k.a. Crossbones back in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, then we saw him die in Civil War. Interestingly enough, he'll be making a comeback in Avengers 4 as per actor Frank Grillo.
Talking during an episode of UFC Unfiltered (via We Got This Covered), Grillo confirmed that he would be making a return as Crossbones via a flashback in Avengers 4. With rumors heavy that the film will feature time travel, it's possible that we could have Cap running into Rumlow before it's revealed that he's a HYDRA agent.
Maybe if Cap really wanted to change the future, he would get to Rumlow before HYDRA gets the chance to recruit him; maybe get rid of Arnim Zola before he could create more damage within SHIELD? How about Alexander Pierce?
Then again, what if it really is just a flashback, and we just see Captain America working together with Rumlow not knowing that he's an agent of HYDRA. If anything, I love seeing old villains come back. With them ending up so underwritten in movies, these small appearances help flesh them out even just a little bit.
With Avengers 4 marking the end of an era for Marvel, I'm hoping that it ties the past ten years together nicely. The universe has evolved greatly ever since 2008's Iron Man, and I'm excited to see how this film will set up the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
