Word had just dropped that there is a Young Mace Windu project in development, and the announcement seems to have come out of nowhere. What's curious is, could this be a result of John Boyega's criticism against the Star Wars franchise?
Earlier this month, John Boyega had made headlines as he criticized Disney and Lucasfilm for siding POC actors like himself and Kelly Marie Tran. He had said:
"Like, you guys knew what to do with Daisy Ridley, you knew what to do with Adam Driver. You knew what to do with these other people, but when it came to Kelly Marie Tran when it came to John Boyega, you know f**k all. So what do you want me to say?"
It's barely been a week since that news, and now we have word that a series/movie centered on a black Jedi is in development. While I'm not complaining about it, it could be a sign that Disney/Lucasfilm is now taking Boyega's words to heart. Even before Boyega's comments, we had word that a Lando Calrissian series was in development with Donald Glover. Having a project based on a Jedi though, is a different story.
If anything, Samuel L. Jackson has been very vocal about coming back to Star Wars, and though he won't be the lead of the series, it would be great to see more of Windu in the future. After all, Windu is said to be the only Jedi who mastered the most aggressive form of lightsaber dueling without falling to the Dark Side; I think that's a story worth exploring.
A Windu series has not been officially announced, but you can catch The Mandalorian Season 2 on Disney+ this Oct. 30.
