Controversial The Last of Us Season 2 Character Refuses To Reprise Role on HBO

Listen, Joel and Ellie may be the central characters on HBO’s The Last of Us, but the Naughty Dog video game never shies away in sharing the spotlight with their unique side characters, which include Tommy Miller, Bill, Frank, among others. If you think the show isn’t adding more characters to the ensemble, you’re dead wrong.

The Last of Us Season 2 is set to introduce more. Apart from the newest addition to the main characters showing up for 2, Abby Andersen, another side character, Owen (who was played by Patrick Fugit in the Naughty Dog video game) is speculated to appear, too. Many fans believe that Owen isn’t a significant character to add into the show, which Fugit completely agrees with.

“I’m obviously twice as old as Owen; I’m 40 and I think Owen’s 20 in the second part of the second game. So I’m not playing Owen, nor do I want to. I did that already.” Fugit said in a recent interview with ScreenRant, “Maybe I’ll play one of those Wolf characters, or one of the cultists. I’ve already got the beard; I’ll just shave my head, and I’m good to go. We’ll see.”

Fugit getting cast on the live show wouldn’t be far-fetched, considering that original Ellie actress Ashley Johnson played her character’s mother, and Troy Baker portrayed one of the cannibals instead of Joel. In fact, Fugit’s unwillingness to play as Owen plays well in his cards, especially since his intimate scene with Abby had been one of the most controversial scenes in the franchise since.

That is, unless showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin could sweep up the script and make Owen much more relevant in the story.

The Last of Us Season 2 is reportedly releasing sometime in 2024. Meanwhile, all nine episodes of The Last of Us are now available to stream on HBO Max.
