Constantine Actor Matt Ryan Reveals Why He Loves Playing the Hellblazer

It's amazing how Matt Ryan's Constantine has managed to stay relevant for all these years. When the live-action series was canceled, it wasn't long before we saw Ryan pop up as the character again, first in Arrow and then DC's Legends of Tomorrow. The actor has also reprised this role for the animated DC movies like Justice League Dark and its sequel Justice League Dark: Apokolips War. Needless to say, it seems like he loves playing John Constantine.

Speaking with CBR, the actor revealed why he keeps coming back to the role. Apparently, every time Ryan thinks this will be the last he plays the character, DC comes back with something else that's more fun or creative. It also helps that he absolutely nails the character's look so we hope Matt Ryan never stops playing Constantine, though I digress.

It's all about the trench coat, man. I've just always wanted to wear a trench coat every day of my life and a loose tie [laughs]. No, you know, there's a great line in The Godfather, Part III: "As soon as I think I'm out, they pull me back in." And my journey with this character is a little bit like that; Every time I think it's over, they pull me back in a wonderful way because there's so much complexity to this character that I've gotten to play with, and there's more to explore. I can't see how to be bored with him.

We're happy to know that the role is constantly fresh for Ryan since most actors usually back out of their role once there's nothing left to do with them. It's fair to say that Constantine's full potential in the entertainment medium has yet to be reached so if a live-action film happens, we hope that Ryan can still play the character.

Justice League Dark: Apokolips War is now available on digital media.
