Confirmed: Bumblebee Reboots the Transformers Franchise

Transformers fans rejoiced with the release of Bumblebee last December, but the movie was still unclear on whether if took place in the same universe as Michael Bay's Transformers films. As it turns out, the film is a full-on reboot, and it looks like we'll be getting whole new stories moving forward without the messy consistency issues.

It was confirmed by Hasbro at the American International Toy Fair (via TFW2005) that Bumblebee introduces us to "a new storytelling universe." We don't get any much info after that, but the implications are tremendous.

For one, we don't have to worry about everything lining up to Sam Witwicky buying Bee off of Bernie Mac in the first Transformers film. We also don't have to worry about the status of Megatron being frozen on Earth for a thousand years. As far as we know, he's alive and well in Cybertron, and we could be getting a G1-accurate look of the character just like with Soundwave and Shockwave.

The timeline basically got thrown out the window with The Last Knight, so the best plan to move forward would be to just reboot the whole thing. If you really loved the Bay movies though, I think you can always tell yourself that this movie takes place in an alternate timeline—just like the story for J.J. Abrams' reboot of Star Trek back in 2009.

Bumblebee was a huge hit for Hasbro, and a sequel has already been greenlit. I don't know about you, but I actually want to go back further and just watch the whole war on Cybertron. Then again, that's just my opinion.

No release date has been set for the Bumblebee sequel.
