Christopher Nolan on People Who Didn't Enjoy Tenet

A lot of people were expecting something huge with Christopher Nolan's Tenet, but the film has admittedly left a lot of audience members confused rather than impressed. With Tenet not exactly getting Inception-levels of praise, Nolan has come out to talk about what he thinks of people who didn't enjoy the film.

Talking to The Washington Post, Nolan explains:

"What I find is people who just watch the movies to be entertained and have a good time, they get the movies and they understand the movies far better than people who fight the movies, who feel they're in some kind of chess match with the movie while they're watching it. And the reality is, the reason people get frustrated like that is that it's not a level playing field. I've had 20 years to think about these ideas. So it's not a level playing field in that sense. It's not meant to be a chess match between filmmaker and audience. It's entertainment. It's a ride you go on and, if done right, there will be aspects to it that will reward a second viewing. When you're dealing with time and when you're dealing with these sorts of complexities, you have to be making a film that the second time you watch it would be a different film."

Admittedly, Tenet is something that goes down better with a second watch, and even then you have to do your research on Youtube and Reddit to find out exactly what's going on and all the clever Easter Eggs that Nolan had hidden in the film. Watching the movie for the first time is very confusing, and it doesn't help that the audio is pretty messed up with the almost silent dialogue and blaring audio for music and explosions.

With subtitles and the proper mindset, you do get to understand what Nolan was going for with Tenet. The movie wasn't perfect, but it was impressive for Nolan to attempt to make a palindrome out of a film.

Tenet is now available for home release.
