Christina Ricci Returns to The Addams Family on Netflix's Wednesday

The Addams Family has been a staple in pop culture for decades ever since the 1960s with the live-action sitcom starring John Astin. The franchise reached its peak in the 1990s thanks to the live-action films that featured the iconic performances of Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston as the Addams couple as well as Christina Ricci's portrayal of Wednesday Addams. Now, the franchise is making its way again to the present day thanks to the upcoming Netflix series Wednesday that will focus on Wednesday Addams in her high school years and it looks like it will feature the return of a beloved star of the '90s films.

According to Deadline, Ricci has joined the cast of Wednesday in a series regular role. The details regarding the character that she is playing are still under wraps to keep it a surprise for fans, but we can guarantee that she won't be playing Wednesday Addams again since that role is going to be played by Scream star Jenna Ortega in the series.

The report indicated that Ricci was brought into the series after Thora Birch's abrupt departure. Her role is said to be similar to the one that Birch played prior to her exit. The actress has been quietly filming her scenes for weeks and production is slated to wrap in Romania at the end of the month.

Ricci is joining the cast that already includes Ortega, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Gwendoline Christie, Luis Guzman, Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Percy Hynes White, Hunter Doohan, Georgie Farmer, Moosa Mostafa, Emma Myers, Naomi J. Ogawa, Joy Sunday, Victor Dorobantu, Issac Ordonez, and George Burcea.

Per the official logline, Wednesday is "a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams' years as a student at Nevermore Academy. Wednesday's attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore."

It is wonderful to hear that Ricci has joined the cast of the series as it is a full-circle moment since she is known for playing Wednesday Addams back when she was a young actress. It's already exciting to see the moment where we see two generations of Wednesday Addams sharing the screen together and it's surely going to be fun for the audience. Ricci's involvement also comes as her career is making its renaissance again which started with her major role in Yellowjackets. Now, there is a lot of reasons to be excited about the series and we shall wait and see what kind of role is she going to play in The Addams Family universe this time around.
