Christian Bale Says The Original Script For Terminator Salvation Was 'Wonderful'

With Terminator Genisys being such a critical bomb when it came out, James Cameron has stepped in to redo the franchise again with Deadpool's Tim Miller in the director's chair. Christian Bale, who was the star of the failed Terminator: Salvation, reflects on his contribution to Terminator and his disappointment with the final product.

While talking to the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Bale opened up:

"I said no three times. I thought that the franchise…I went ‘Nah, there's no story there.' I'd seen the first one and enjoyed that back in England, I'd been to the movies and seen the second one. It was an unfortunate series of events involving the writers' strike, involving [Jonathan Nolan], who was able to come on, and really start to write a wonderful script, but then got called away for a prior commitment that he had. And it's a great thorn in my side, because I wish we could have reinvigorated [the franchise]. And unfortunately, during production, you could tell that wasn't happening. It's a great shame."

It seems that Bale was under a huge amount of stress for this film, seeing that he was also working in this production when he was documented having a major rant against a member of the crew. Bale admits that a lot of people were already telling him not to do the movie, but he took the role just to show that he could prove them wrong:

"There's a perverse side to me, where people were telling me that, there's no way on God's Earth that I should take that role, and I was thinking the same thing. But when people started verbalizing that to me, I started to go, ‘Oh really? All right, well watch this then.' So there was a little bit of that involved in the choice."

The last two Terminator movies were actually aiming to start their own trilogies, but with each of them failing to connect to audiences, we'll have to wait for yet another shot at the franchise. Hopefully Cameron and Miller can tell where the previous movies went wrong, and they can avoid all of that with their Terminator film.

The sixth Terminator movie is set for a release on July 26, 2019.
