Chris Hemsworth recently talked about his most memorable roles including the inspiration to the comedic evolution of Thor.
In an interview with Variety, the actor opened up about how restricting Thor's "stiff and proper" demeanor for him. This was the case in first solo movies of the God of Thunder, which are undoubtedly considered inferior to the third solo installment, Thor: Ragnarok directed by Taika Waititi.
"After I'd done Avengers and Thor 2, I did feel a bit trapped," Hemsworth admitted. "I felt like I was typecast by whoever was writing those scripts. I feel like the creators were stuck on where they could take the character, and was this all he had to offer? I felt there was so much more we could do," he went on to say.
Waititi seemed to agree. While he understood what the previous films were going for considering Thor is super old, he felt that it was "not a recipe for a great character." Like Hemsworth, the director knew Thor had to loosen up a bit. But was a comedic Thor ever going to work out?
Hemsworth proved it could. He showed off his comedy chops in the 2016 gender-swapped reboot of Ghostbusters, where he played the role of the hot receptionist Kevin. As per variety, the actor credits the movie, which starred Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig, and Leslis Jones, for helping ease fans to the idea of the funny Thor we now know and love.
In fact, the actor loved being on the film so much he was willing to do a sequel, which didn't happen much to the actor's disappointment.
"That whole period I was like, 'What ownership do you guys have over those characters?'" Hemsworth said. "Oh, you watched the film, therefore you should have a say over where it goes? I thought it was very unfortunate and kind of disappointing," he admitted.
