Chris Evans Gives Insightful Comment on Steve Rogers Return

After the original Avengers left the MCU, some fans believe that Marvel has lost its touch to produce quality content with Phase 4’s underwhelming reception and Phase 5’s unwelcoming head start with Ant-Man 3. Not that anyone needs reminding, but Tony Stark, aka Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), and Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), met their saddening demise in Avengers: Endgame, with Steve Rogers, aka Captain America (Chris Evans), retiring to be with the love of his life. Despite the current realities of the beloved Avengers, most fans are still expecting them to pop up in upcoming installments, whether it be through a cameo, a flashback, or the notion of the multiverse.

Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson has already succeeded Evans as Captain America, and his take on the iconic hero will be heavily featured in the upcoming Captain America 4. Given the current set-up, Evans has been very vocal about his potential comeback to the MCU, always citing that he had "a good run" as the hero and he sees the end as the "near-perfect recipe" to close the chapter and to reopen it would be upsetting mainly for him. In a new interview via Laughing Place, the Before We Go star reiterates his stand on Steve Rogers' return to the battleground.

“It’s tough, because look, I love that role deeply. He means so much to me, and I really do. Do I think there are more Steve Rogers stories to tell? Sure, but at the same time, I’m very, very precious with it. It’s like this little shiny thing that I have that I love so much and I just don’t want to mess up in any way. And I was a part of something that was so special for a really special period of time and in a way, it really landed so well. I don’t know. As much as I’m connected to that role and love telling those stories of working with those people, it doesn’t quite feel right, right now.” reasoned Evans.

Deadline reported in 2021 that the Fantastic Four star is expected to reprise his role in at least one Marvel outing, but Evans immediately debunked the report, saying that he is unaware of a potential return. Given the consistent comments of the actor, it's becoming a fat chance to see Steve Rogers in the MCU once again. Someday, Evans might decide to return to the superhero franchise, but fans have to accept that The Gray Man actor is currently done on the heroic ground.

Captain America: New World premieres in cinemas on May 3, 2024.
